Nowadays the metaverse is described as a fully immersive internet, broadly speaking it is the technology that engulfs virtual reality, and augmented reality and combines aspects of digital and physical worlds.
It is not, however, a new concept, firstly in 1838 Charles Wheatstone introduced the concept of “binocular vision” where you combine two images to produce a single 3D image, jump forward to 1935 and American writer Stanley Weinbaum described a fictional world where only through a pair of googles you could experience the sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. In 1956 Morton Heilig created the first VR Machine, that simulated riding a motorcycle, in 1960 He also patented the first head-mounted display which combined Stereoscopic 3D Images with stereo sound.
From then on, the metaverse has evolved and incorporated its roots and expanded with technology, in 1990 the videogame manufacturer Sega introduced the first VR arcade machine, in 1998 the NFL broadcaster Sportsvision introduced the first live game with yellow markers overlaying graphics over the real-world transmissions.
Finally, in 2010 an 18-year-old entrepreneur Palmer Luckey created the prototype for the Oculus Rift VR headset, with a 90-degree field of vision and full use of computer processing power. In 2011 Ernest Cline released the novel Read Player One, which was converted into a runaway hit in 2018 by Steven Spielberg with the movie by the same name. This was the first peek of a fully immersive and expansive world designed to escape reality.
Currently, the metaverse is one the most developed technology concepts in the world reaching a far and wide diversity of companies and concepts, such as Meta (Facebook), Apple, Walmart, Amazon, Home Depot, Ikea, Target, Lens Crafter, Maybelline, Sephora, Gucci, Kohls, Nike, etc.
The concept has grown so much that an increasing number of virtual worlds has sprouted to consolidate the current Web 3.0 version on the internet, Meta (Horizon Worlds), Sandbox, Decentraland, Upland, Somnium Space, CryptoVoxels and many others have combined many elements of virtual reality, games as well as cryptocurrency and Digital Collectibles to cement this new and ever-expanding version of the metaverse.
Here at IDGNFT, we believe Digital Collectibles will increasingly offer a way for people to express their individualism, and that is essential in an online world of billions. Maybe in the vastness of virtual universes, Digital Collectibles are what will help keep us distinctly, unmistakably human.
We believe that the fundamental technology behind Digital Collectibles points to a new economy, a transformed landscape, and new fashions for collectibles conjuring a new path to personal expression, which will continue to entice people to the Metaverse.
